2Line.AI or Grasshopper?
Grasshopper is a virtual phone system with extensions, call forwarding to your cell and optional AI, live or hybrid receptionist coverage. 2Line.AI is a second number on your phone with Mia, an AI receptionist built in, who answers when you can’t, books appointments and leaves you a written slip.

Who each is for
Grasshopper is for businesses that want a classic virtual phone system: extensions, a phone menu, call forwarding to your cell and voicemail, from $14 a month billed yearly on True Solo. It adds AI, live human or hybrid receptionist options, plus AI call summaries, transcripts and sentiment. If you want callers to choose a department from a menu, or want the option of a live person, it’s built for that.
2Line.AI is for owners who want callers to talk to a receptionist rather than a menu. Mia is built into the app: she answers in your business name, books appointments inside your hours and leaves a slip after every call she takes. Missed-call texts, reminders with C/R replies, review requests and On my way texts come with it, and texting registration is part of setup.
What a typical day looks like with each
With Grasshopper
A two-person bookkeeping office uses Grasshopper. Callers hear a menu, pick new or existing clients, and the call goes to the right person’s extension or forwards to their cell. If nobody answers, the caller leaves a voicemail. With one of the receptionist options added, a receptionist can pick up instead.
With 2Line.AI
A solo bookkeeper on 2Line.AI has no menu. Mia answers with the firm’s name, asks whether the caller is a new or existing client and what they need, and books a consultation inside your hours. If it’s a client with an urgent deadline, she hands the call to you. Afterwards you read the slip, and the caller already has a text saying what happens next.
Choose 2Line.AI if
- You want callers to talk to a receptionist, not a phone menu
- You want bookings and leads from your calls
Grasshopper may fit better if
- You need extensions and a classic phone menu for several people
- You want the option of live human receptionists
Switching from Grasshopper to 2Line.AI
- Pick a new local number in 2Line.AI from the area codes near you. Porting isn’t supported, so this is a new number, not your Grasshopper number moved over.
- Set your business name, hours and caller ID name (up to 15 characters). Teach Mia from your business name or website, then call the new number from another phone to test her.
- Keep Grasshopper running while you switch, so anyone who still has the old number reaches you. A month or two of overlap is a sensible minimum.
- Tell your customers. Text your regulars from the new number, and change the old number’s voicemail greeting to give the new one.
- Update your Google Business Profile (Edit profile, then Contact, then Phone number), then your website, Apple Maps, Yelp, Facebook, cards and truck.
- When calls to the old number have slowed to a trickle, cancel Grasshopper.
If you rely on Grasshopper’s extensions to route calls to different people, plan how you’ll handle that first. 2Line.AI has no extensions, though each line can have its own greeting and hours. Step-by-step help for Google is in our guide to changing your Google Business Profile phone number.
What 2Line.AI doesn’t do
Worth knowing before you choose:
- No phone menus or extensions. Mia answers like a receptionist instead.
- No shared team inbox or per-user seats. Each account has one owner, with as many lines as you need.
- No human receptionists. Mia is an AI receptionist; she hands urgent calls to you.
- No number porting. You get a new local US number; you can’t move an existing number in.
- Calls, texts and Mia aren’t bundled into the plan; they use credits. At zero credits they pause until you add more, and your number stays yours.
