Where your personal number leaks
Once you work with the public, your cell number ends up in more places than you’d think. Each one is a place to swap in a business number:
| Where | What to do |
|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | List the business number as your primary number |
| Website and social profiles | Put the business number in the footer, contact page and bios |
| Truck, yard signs and cards | Print the business number only |
| Invoices, quotes and email signature | Update the templates once |
| Calls and texts you make | Call and text out from the business line |
| Marketplace and directory listings | Use the business number, or the listing’s own messaging |
Step 1: Get a second number
A second-number app adds a business number to the phone you already carry. Calls and texts to it ring in its own app, so you don’t need a second phone or a second SIM. Pick a local area code your customers recognize.
Step 2: Use it everywhere public
Put it on your website, Google Business Profile, truck, cards and listings. Your cell stays with family and friends.
If customers already have your cell, text them once from the new number to say it’s your business line now, and save new contacts against that line.
Step 3: Call and text out from the business number
Calls and texts you start from the business line show that number, so customers never see your cell. Set a caller ID name, such as your business name, so the call looks familiar. On 2Line.AI it’s up to 15 characters per line, and carriers can take a few days to show it.
Hiding your number isn’t a good substitute. A call with no caller ID can look like spam, and the customer has no number to call you back on.
Step 4: Set business hours
Outside your hours, send calls to an AI receptionist or voicemail instead of ringing at dinner. On 2Line.AI, hours are set once in your time zone and don’t move when you travel. Mia can answer every call, only after hours, or only when you don’t pick up, and you can switch her on or off from the app, a widget or Siri.
Step 5: Screen unknown callers
Spam labels, blocking and screening keep robocalls off your evening. On 2Line.AI, likely spam is labelled before it rings, you can block or unblock any number in one tap with undo, and unknown callers can go to Mia, who asks who’s calling and why and leaves you a slip.
Step 6: Keep work in its own space
A separate app keeps work threads out of your personal messages. On 2Line.AI each line has its own label and color, and every call and text shows which line it came in on, so a customer’s message never lands in a family group chat.
Your checklist for this week
- Pick a business number with a local area code.
- Change your Google Business Profile number: Edit profile, then Contact, then Phone number. Google reviews the change before it goes live.
- Update your website, social profiles, invoices and email signature.
- Use the new number on cards and signs the next time you reprint.
- Text your regular customers the new number.
- Set your business hours and choose when Mia answers.
