The four ways, side by side
Four common ways, compared on what you carry, what you pay and what the line does when you can’t answer.
| Option | What you need | Monthly cost | Business extras |
|---|---|---|---|
| Second-number app | An app on the phone you already have | A plan, sometimes plus usage | Often voicemail to text, spam labels, registered business texting, an AI receptionist |
| Second line on your carrier (eSIM) | A dual-SIM phone and a second carrier line | Another phone plan | Usually none |
| Second phone | Another device and plan | Another phone plan, plus the phone | Usually none |
| Business phone system | An account for each user | Priced per user | Extensions, phone menus, shared inboxes, integrations |
Option 1: A second-number app
A second-number app gives you a real local US number that rings in its own app over Wi-Fi or mobile data. Anyone can call or text it from any phone, and when you call out from the app, customers see the business number, not your cell.
It’s the fastest option, with no contract and no new hardware. The trade-offs: calls need a data connection, and many apps, 2Line.AI included, don’t support 911.
Option 2: A second line on your carrier (eSIM)
Most recent phones can hold two lines. Apple says Dual SIM lets an iPhone have two active phone numbers that can both make and receive calls and texts, and iPhone 13 and later can use two eSIMs. Many Android phones support dual SIM too; check your model.
The catch: it’s usually a second phone plan, and a plain line with nothing that answers for you.
Option 3: A second phone
A second device is the simplest way to separate work and home, but it means two phones to carry and charge and two plans to pay for.
Option 4: A business phone system
Business phone systems are built for teams: shared numbers, extensions, phone menus and integrations, usually priced per user per month. Great for an office, often more than a solo owner needs.
What to check before you choose
- Local area codes. Can you pick a number from the area codes your customers know?
- Ownership. Is the number yours while you pay, and what happens if you stop?
- Business texting. In the US, business texts from a local number should be registered with carriers (A2P 10DLC). Ask whether the provider handles it.
- Pricing. Flat plan, per user, per minute or credits? Check what missed calls and voicemail cost.
- Porting. If you already have a business number you want to keep, check whether the provider can move it in.
- Emergency calls. If the app doesn’t support 911, keep your regular phone for emergencies.
Set up a second number with 2Line.AI
- Install 2Line.AI, or sign in at 2line.ai/app, and pick from four numbers mixed across the area codes near you.
- Start the plan: $19.99 a month, or $99.99 a year with 3 days free. Every plan starts with 100 credits, once.
- Turn on notifications so the line rings like a normal call, and you can answer from the lock screen.
- Set your business name, hours and caller ID name (up to 15 characters).
- Teach Mia, the AI receptionist, from your business name or website, and choose when she answers: always, after hours, or when you don’t pick up.
What it costs on 2Line.AI
| What | Price |
|---|---|
| Monthly plan | $19.99 a month, one number included |
| Yearly plan | $99.99 a year, with 3 days free |
| Calls in or out | 8 credits a minute, from when the call connects |
| Mia answering | 48 credits a minute, from when she picks up |
| Texts | 8 credits sent, 7 received |
| Extra numbers | 300 credits a month each |
| Credit packs | 150 for $4.99, 950 for $19.99, 4,000 for $59.99 |
Missed calls and ring time are free. Limits to know: numbers are US only, porting an existing number in isn’t supported, and 2Line.AI doesn’t support 911.
