What makes a missed-call text work
- Your business name in the first few words, so they know who’s texting.
- A short sorry. One line is enough.
- One next step: reply with the job, pick a time, or wait for a call back.
- A time you can keep (“within the hour”, “first thing tomorrow”).
- No sales pitch. It’s a reply to their call, not an ad.

Keep it carrier-friendly
US carriers filter business texts that look like spam. Two things help most. First, send from a number registered for business texting (A2P 10DLC). Second, keep the text a direct reply to the call.
Carrier industry guidance (CTIA’s Messaging Principles and Best Practices) treats a conversation the customer started as conversational messaging, which doesn’t need extra permission. Adding a coupon or promotion can turn a text into promotional messaging, which needs the customer’s written agreement first. So keep missed-call texts about their call, not your sale.
Avoid ALL CAPS, lots of links, and phrases that read like ads (“Act now!”, “Limited time!”).
Opt-out etiquette
- Send one text per missed call, not a sequence of follow-ups.
- If someone replies STOP, stop. Don’t argue or send “are you sure?”
- Never text numbers you’ve blocked.
- If you want to be extra careful, add “Reply STOP to opt out” to automated texts.
- Don’t add missed callers to a marketing list without asking.
Set it up on 2Line.AI
On a 2Line number, missed-call text back sends your message within moments of a missed call. Each caller gets at most one per call, blocked numbers never get it, and after a Mia call the caller gets one “what happens next” text instead. Each text costs 8 credits, the same as any text you send.
- Turn on missed-call text back in the app.
- Write your message once, or start from one of the templates above.
- Every missed caller gets it automatically, day or night.
